Since the Romans beheaded my uncle... The Bructeri have always hated them. He was the old Reik of the Bructeri. My uncle's heir in the Bructeri... is my mother's cousin. It's difficult. My father is Cherusci and my mother, Bructeran. I often feel like I'm a traveler between worlds. I mean when we wage war against them. I'm stuck in the middle. I ask myself, "Who is my reik?" "Whose skull should I crack?" It's confusing sometimes.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 1[]

Avenging His Uncle's Death[]

Berulf is working at a Roman's camp when he notices his uncle is being held captive. He watches helplessly as his uncle, Gernot Redbeard, is beheaded by Arminius.[2]

Berulf returns to Cherusci and confronts Arminius upon his arrival. Arminius doesn’t wish to battle, but Berulf seeks a fight to the death. He charges at Arminius with an axe, gravely wounding him during the battle. Despite his injury, Arminius defeats Berulf, though he spares the Cheruscan’s life. With his back turned, Berulf attacks and nearly beats him to death until Folkwin intervenes and knocks Berulf unconscious with a single blow to the head.

Berulf arrives outside of Segimer’s hut and demands that Arminius face him. When Folkwin tries to intervene, Berulf punches him in the face. Segimer then exits his hut, allowing for Arminius to sneak out back with the eagle.

After Folkwin's family is crucifed by Varus for Folkwin having stolen their eagle. When Folkwin returns to the tribe, Berulf approaches and tells him that he and the other guys will follow him wherever he goes. As Folkwin attempts to take his family down, Berulf hits him over the head and carries him out of the village for his own safety as Varus wants his head.[1]

Seeking Refuge with the Bructeri[]

Berulf urges Folkwin to search for allies so they may get revenge. The Bructeri have always hated the Romans, but that hatred has grown since they beheaded his uncle, Gernot Redbeard. He was their old reik. Gernot’s heir in the Bructeri is Berulf's mother’s cousin. Berulf’s father is Cherusci while his mother is Bructeran. They suddenly find themselves surrounded by the Bructeri.

Reik of Bructeri, Kunolf the Brukteer, greets Berulf and tells him that he has his mother’s eyes. He’s heard the tale of how Folkwin stoke the Roman’s eagle and wishes to hear the story from Folkwin himself. So Kunolf offers them a place to stay. Berulf then tells the story of how Thusnelda, Folkwin, Hanno, and Eigil captured the eagle as if he was there. He remarks that he was there in spirit. Golmad asks about Thusnelda, who’s said to be a warrior. Berulf claims that Thusnelda is not only a warrior but also a seer.

Folkwin hears the doors creaking and awakens Berulf, Hanno, Eigil, and Luco. They turn their attention towards the door only for a goat to enter. The Bructeri woman who they are laying with suddenly turn their blades on them, forcing the men to flee out the back door as the Bructeri attack, having sold them out for the reward offered for Folkwin’s head. Berulf blocks the door with his body whilst the others escape. However, he is stabbed in the chest and killed by Kunolf.[3]
