Hanno is a supporting character on the Netflix original series Barbarians. He is portrayed by Sebastian Griegel.
Hanno was a Cheruscan warrior who assisted Thusnelda and Folkwin in infiltrating the Romans' camp and stealing the eagle.[1] In retaliation, Varus crucifed Folkwin's family and issued a bounty on Folkwin, who Hanno followed until his death at the hands of the Romans.[2]
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
Stealing Rome's Standard[]
Hanno informs Folkwin that they have to gather the tribute. Folkwin refuses as they have so little left. However, his mother, Ida, tells him to give the tribute. They’d give their last goat if the reik commanded it. And as it turns out, it is in fact they’re last goat.
Hanno, Eigil, Folkwin, and Thusnelda plot to invade the Roman fort after Ansgar is left brain damaged. Hanno and Eigil sneak in through the back by going underwater. They stumble upon two guards inside their tent and kill them before retrieving a container to hide the standard in and reconvening with Thusnelda and Folkwin. While the Romans secure the camp, the four of them set the tent a blaze and walk right through the unmanned front barrier of the camp with the standard.
They return home with the eagle. The entire tribe bares witness to their return and cheers them on. Folkwin hops down from the horse and hands Segimer the standard, who screams in triumph.[1]
Fleeing Cherusci[]
Hanno and Eigil confront Segestes for his treachery after Folkwin's family is killed by Varus. Segestes claims this is Folkwin’s fault. He betrayed the reik and challenged Rome. However, Hanno and Eigil remain true to their stance, reminding Segestes how he even rides with the men who made his son a cripple. Segimer intervenes and shames everyone for arguing in front of the dead in such a manner and dismisses the tribe.
When Folkwin finally returns, Hanno, Eigil, Berulf, and Luco tell Folkwin that they will follow him wherever he goes. As Folkwin attempts to take his family down, Berulf hits him over the head and carries him out of the village for his own safety.[3]
Killed in the Dark Lands[]
Hanno, Eigil, Folkwin, Berulf, and Luco plot their next move. Berulf urges Folkwin to search for allies so they may get revenge, perhaps the Bructeri, who has always hated the Romans, but that hatred has grown since they beheaded his uncle, Gernot Redbeard. They suddenly find themselves surrounded by the Bructeri and are taken to Kunolf the Brukteer, who invites them to stay.
That night, Folkwin awakens them from their sleep as he hears something outside of the door. A goat then enters. The Bructeri woman who they are laying with suddenly begin killing them, forcing the men to flee out the back door as the Bructeri attack. Berulf blocks the door with his body whilst the others escape. Unfortunately, he is killed by Kunolf.
They reach the Dark Land. Luco warns that no mortal has ever gone in and come back out. It is supposedly the land of the undead. Luco is too afraid to proceed and turns back around whereas Hanno and Eigil follow behind Folkwin into the Dark Land.
Folkwin, Hanno, and Eigil huddle around a fire. Hanno tells Eigil that when they get home that he’ll marry his sister. In his dreams, she blessed him with a ton of kids and Eigil will be an uncle. Suddenly, a spear pierces Hanno’s throat. The Romans have found them and a fight ensues. Folkwin is the last man standing is his crew after Hanno is killed as well. [4]
